The wisdom of the wise on Making, Saving, Investing, and Enjoying your money.
The New Money Book of Personal Finance , by the editors of Money magazine. I wonder how much it would cost to fly in all the editors of Money magazine, who make it their business to learn and dispense sound wisdom on personal finance, to sit in my living room and tell me the best ways to advance my career, invest my money, buy a house etc. Fortunately, I don't have to pay for their air fare and time. They put that wisdom in a book.
It's over 500 pages of wisdom, well-organized and simply written. It's got plenty of detail, based on facts rather than "here's how I did it and it worked for me."
Recommendation: read through the entire book to get a great overview of personal finance, then keep the book handy to turn to the chapters you need when they become relevant. Example: when you need to buy a house, re-read the real estate chapters.
I read (and refer here to) the 1998 revised edition. I'm sure the 2002 revision, The New Money Book of Personal Finance, will include updated information on the latest tax laws, types of home loans, etc.
